Nostalgia Electrics OFP901 Popcorn Popper, Red/Gold Review

Nostalgia Electrics OFP901 Popcorn Popper, Red/Gold
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At first everyone was oooing and aahhhhing but wouldn't consider this a classic or anything, since now (2 months later) we barely use it. It's cute, no doubt, and it works. The kernels are air popped, so not as fluffy which I didn't know before, but some people seem to like it that way. I expected it to be a little bigger looking at the picture. The wheel doesn't work, just there for decoration. It wasn't the greatest present to give for my brother's birthday.... but It'll do..

Jumbo Popcorn Bags (12) - 50 Count

The bags work fine. Not much to say about them. However, it should be noted that if you have a popcorn machine with a standard size scooper, it is a little big to quickly fill these bags because of their size. A larger bag or boxes would definitely be better.

I just want to say that this is a cool popcorn maker. I have had mine for a couple months now and love it. VERY easy to do! Simply push a button, in a couple minutes, pour in one side of the popcorn packet (oil) then the other side (popcorn and seasoning.) A few minutes later bright yellow, popcorn appears. The popcorn mixture they sell is GREAT! You can use your own, but the premix they sell is very close to movie theater popcorn. (And cheaper than microwave popcorn!) The popper itself looks cool and is easy to use. The bottom cleans very easily, the cooking pot removes from the top for cleaning as well. I really like this popper!

Great Northern Popcorn Red Popcorn Time 6 oz. Ounce Antique Popcorn Machine and Cart

I am a jeweler with Premier Designs Jewelry. Once a month, I have a training at my home for ladies that are in my downline. They absolutely love the popcorn I make for them. I really think it is a feature to my training that draws my jewelers to training. Getting people to come to a volunteer training is not easy. Anyway, the popcorn is delicious and its easy to make...and easy to clean afterward. My children enjoy it as well in our home theatre room. It serves many purposes. I am very pleased with this product.

The popcorn packets and most convenient - but also tasty! The aroma attracts folks from miles around and it's very easy to use. My fingers get burned a bit trying to empty the mix into the kettle - but it works better with practice. I don't let other people TRY even though it looks easy - So the POPCORN is great the POPPER is a bit tricky !

The machine pops as described but unless you have never tasted popcorn cooked any other way you will see this machine performs that function poorly. The kernels are too tough and and I use orville redinbacher. This brand of popcorn cooked any other way would be light and fluffy not hard to chew and with many unpopped. I begin to see why they include an unpopped kernel catcher. The pan is too small so the kernels do not have time to fall back when pushed up during popping so they come out with the rest of the popped corn. Maybe too this is why the machine is no longer available here. I do not know why the texture difference though but must be due to poor design since as stated most other methods of cooking the same popcorn will result in melt in your mouth kernels..

This is the real deal. It's small and will look great on any countertop/bar top. We used Orville Redenbacher popping oil along with their kernels and within 3 minutes, our house was filled with the wonderful scent of movie style popcorn. The steam hits the glass and scent is carried away throughout your house.
It only accepts 1/4 cup of kernels at a time, so it does take a few sessions to really fill up the box...if that is what you are looking for.
The only downside we've noticed is that a lot of kernels come flying out of the kettle. Not sure why but we lose a very good portion of them when we pop.

I love this popper. I was looking for a way to make homemade kettle corn & this is it. It is so easy to use. My 12 yr old makes popcorn by himself and my younger kids love to crank the handle. For kettle corn I use 1/2 cup Orville popcorn, 1/4 c white sugar(brown makes caramel corn) and a little oil, sprinkle with salt before serving. Dump all together and put on burner. 5 mins later you have delicious kettle corn. I highly recommend this if you are tired of microwave and really want delicious homemade popcorn. A little FYI we have tried the popcorn kit it comes with, while it is good(a wee bit salty in spots) it's really not all that necessary. You get delicious popcorn using Orville's and a little butter drizzled on.

Whirley-Pop Theater Gift Set with Stovetop Popcorn Popper Review

Whirley-Pop Theater Gift Set with Stovetop Popcorn Popper

Give the Wabash people a call. They will ask you when you bought the popper and they will register your product. Then they will send you a brand new lid no questions asked. They will continue to do this for the next 25 years. I wish the entire gear system was made of metal, but with impeccable customer service like Wabash provides, I can overlook that.
As for the popper itself, the other reviews pretty much cover it. More fun and healthier than microwave popcorn and easier to store than a hot air job. I use 1/8 cup olive oil to 1/2 cup popcorn and don't even bother turning the gear until I hear the first kernel explode. I'm hoping this will save wear and tear for next time. I melt a tablespoon or two of butter over the top just 'cause I like the taste and add a little salt right in the kettle (be sure to use a potholder...it's hot!). Once the popcorn is gone, I fit the lid back on and stick it back under the cabinet. I don't even bother to wipe it out. Keeps it nice and seasoned!

The Original Whirley Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper Theater Style Popcorn Set Review

The Original Whirley Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper Theater Style Popcorn Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have purchased several Whirley Pop Popcorn Poppers from Amazon and other locations. Everyone who sees me use it wants one and thus I have given them to friends as Christmas presents. Rather than restate many things covered in other reviews I will point out a few things.
Before popping make sure the tips of the arms that stir the popcorn are pointed up. If these become flipped while cleaning and the tips point down the tips grind the bottom of the pan.
The directions tell you not to use butter but I have no problem using a mix of half butter and half olive oil.
When buying packages of premeasured popcorn/salt/oil do not buy the 8 oz. size. These are too large for the popper and you have to take it off of the stove before it completes. This results in very salty and oily popcorn. Stick with the 4 or 6 oz. packages.
Remember, solid oils are bad for you and this is what is used in most packages that include the popcorn, oil and salt. If you are buying a Whirley Pop to get away from the hazards of microwave popcorn then consider using olive oil.
Crank slowly. All you need to do is move the popcorn around for even heating. Cranking too fast causes the popcorn to push up onto the side of the pan.
Once the popping is done it may seem convenient to shake a cheese mix into the pan and use the crank to mix it into the popcorn. If you do this the cheese with stick to the shaft and arms of the popper. Pour your popcorn into a bowl before adding flavorings.

Maxi-Matic EPM-450 Elite Tabletop Old-Fashioned 4-Ounce Kettle Popcorn Popper Machine Review

Maxi-Matic EPM-450 Elite Tabletop Old-Fashioned 4-Ounce Kettle Popcorn Popper Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've owned this machine for 3 months and consistently use it one or two times a week for our home theater. It's been a great machine - the stirring rod has never jammed, it's easy to clean and makes popcorn fast.
I did a bit of research before buying. Here's the key features on this machine that aren't on the others in its price range:
-- Really easy to clean kettle. It rotates down and the stirring rod stays affixed to the underside of the top of the machine. This makes it really easy to wipe out the kettle since there isn't a stirring mechanism in the way.
-- When you lift the lid on the kettle it sticks to a magnet on the underside of the top. This keeps it out of the way for adding popcorn or cleaning.
-- A heater beneath the popcorn to keep it warm. Most machines just have a lamp, which really doesn't do much. A dedicated heating element does a much better job. Also a bright lamp is distracting when watching a movie. I replaced my with a much lower wattage bulb, but since it has a separate heater the popcorn still stays warm.
-- Tempered glass walls. A nice touch and easier to clean, although the door is plexiglass.
-- 4 oz kettle. I've found this to be the perfect size for 2 adults and 2 kids. It will four small bags that are about 3" wide by 6" tall (labeled as 1 oz bags of course). Once you have a popcorn machine you love to have fresh popcorn but you also don't need a big huge bag. I'd wouldn't recommend a 2 oz kettle for anybody, it's just not enough for anything other than one person. A 6 oz kettle would be better for parties or more than 4 people, but I just pop two batches when we have guests.
Other machines have these features (such as the Paragon units) but they cost around $300. This is a great deal and I'd buy it again.

Pop up to 1-1/2 gallons of hot, fresh, delicious popcorn at a time with this carnival-style popcorn popper. The unit features a large 4-ounce stainless-steel kettle with a built-in stirring mechanism for even distribution and perfect hot-oil popping. Two separate on/off toggle switches control the kettle and the warming light, which keeps popcorn warm for hours. The thoughtfully designed machine also provides a pull-out kernel crumb tray, plexi-glass windows and door for safe viewing, and a detachable kettle for easy cleaning. Whether popping corn for a fundraiser, birthday party, or movie night with friends, the appliance offers a festive addition to any social gathering. Accessories include a measuring spoon, a measuring cup, and a handy scooping trough. Reminiscent of the old-fashioned theatre-style popcorn carts, but in a smaller size that can fit on a countertop or table, the hot-oil popcorn popper measures approximately 17-2/7 by 20 by 23-3/5 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

Nostalgia Circus-Cart Popcorn Makers Review

Nostalgia Circus-Cart Popcorn Makers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most popcorn makers of the 4 oz. kettle size and up are much more expensive than this model manufactured for the Helman Group (aka Nostalgia Electrics). Consequently, I would say that it is a good value ---- but that's not to say it doesn't have its flaws. Unlike many of its more expensive competitors, this model carries a commercial rating, but that doesn't translate into a bulletproof appliance that your kids can knock around without denting or damaging it (or worse, burning themselves on the hot kettle). The storage shelf built into the stand is covered by a metal door with rather fragile looking hinges, and the plexiglass panel that provides access to the hopper ought to be framed in metal to keep it from flexing flimsily. Fortunately, though the metal housing is rather thin, we noticed no major dents or flaws in the paint job. Nevertheless, even with gentle use the wheel cover nut came off after one week and we can't get Helman Group to return phone calls. Their customer service line is either busy or routes to an answering machine. This lends a very unprofessional impression, to say the least. In this respect, I have to dock it a star. There's only a 90-day warranty and no real support to back it. The manufacturer had better hope that nobody calls their state attorney general's office. In any event, when paying more than $200, an extended warranty isn't a bad idea whether it's a piece of fitness equipment or a novelty appliance.
The key to using this popper with success is to use FRESH POPCORN KERNELS in combination with the CORRECT MEASUREMENTS. Fresh doesn't necessarily mean the kernels at your grocery store that you purchased last week. Who knows how long they sat there while the average customer bypassed them for the microwave variety? Case-in-point: We had some gourmet popcorn left over from a gift set a year or so back and it popped great, whereas the "new" bag of popcorn kernels didn't pop well at all. So when there are complaints on Internet reviews about too many kernels left unpopped, it could be a bad heating element but more likely stale popcorn kernels are to blame. I have no idea if this explains it, but most corn is genetically modified by splicing genes of unrelated plants and animals to create disease resistant, higher yield crops (aka "frankenfood"). It could be that much of the so-called popcorn kernels sold today are inferior for popping because they are no longer natural. Try switching to organic, non-GMO and/or another brand and you will be pleased with the results.
Commercial popcorn rental units have a technique not mentioned in the user manual that ships with the CPP510. After pre-heating the kettle by flipping on the switch for 3 minutes add in the oil and THREE kernels. If all three pop, add the remainder to the kettle. Secondly, when popping, never use more than a half cup (level, not heaping). This is key if you don't want the mechanism that stirs the corn to jam. Same goes for oil and seasoning. For this reason there are tools included for accurate measurements. And lastly, that handy light bulb in the top looks cool but unless you pop multiple back-to-back batches to fill the hopper, it's just too far removed from the bottom of the hopper to keep the popcorn piping hot (a batch, incidentally, is about 8-10 cups of popped corn). The warming light is better than nothing, though. (And since it is an ordinary light bulb, no costly or exotic lighting replacements are in store.)
As stated before, this unit is not a toy. It looks nice but the sheet metal is very sharp inside and it is easy to cut yourself while cleaning the unit ---- speaking from firsthand experience, I might add. In addition, it is up to the user to time the popping. Once the corn pops more slowly it is vitally important to shut off the heat to the kettle so that the warming element will not burn out prematurely. Generally, it takes only 3-5 minutes to warm the kettle. Once the ingredients are added it generally takes another 3 minutes or so to pop the contents. There is no need to wait for a cool-down time between batches. (Just be careful when refilling the kettle to turn off the heating element first and to wear gloves to prevent burns.)
When turning the handle to dump the popcorn into the hopper be careful not to hit the mechanism too hard. The kettle's motor assembly is held to the underside of the metal roof by a plastic bracket. Moreover, giving it a hard swing from side to side may damage the gear alignment. In fact, the trickiest part about using the popper is getting the kettle seated properly. At a height of 4'11, this task requires either a chair or a lot of awkward bending/reaching. The user manual warns that if the popper jams or doesn't operate correctly, it could be a result of misaligned gears due to failing to seat the kettle properly.
The instructions don't give any advice on seasoning. Because of that, it requires a bit of experimentation to obtain the desired flavor. If you want the artery clogging variety traditionally served in theaters, use coconut oil with butter flavoring. If you prefer your popcorn a bit healthier, the good news is that this is entirely doable because just about any oil can be used to pop corn. We prefer popping oil that is unsaturated, non-hydrogenated and trans-fat free. To that we add 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Flavacol butter flavored salt manufactured by Gold Medal. The result is popcorn flavor that no microwave or air popper can approach -- and not the least bit greasy, either (thanks to the fact that the popper only requires 1 tablespoon of oil and distributes it evenly). For the latter, our preference is Orville Redenbacher Popping & Topping Oil.
The instructions don't give much advice on cleaning except to say that the kettle is supposed to become "seasoned" as a result of normal use. After reading reviews in which people complain that after a year or so of use their stirring mechanism begins to jam, I can't help but wonder if this is due to an excessive buildup of this so-called seasoning. Since none of the parts are dishwasher safe and cannot be immersed in water, an excessively dirty kettle just might be an explanation. Thankfully, there are concession supply websites that offer popcorn kettle cleaners. Because we haven't been using our popper for long, our approach thus far is to simply to wipe the interior down with a mixture of water and vinegar. (But don't use anything but a damp cloth on the painted surfaces!)
The assembly instructions aren't the best, but our box shipped complete with no missing parts. It took about 40 minutes to assemble using the included diagram/instructions. Assembly tools are included but for a Phillips screwdriver.
Bottom line? This popcorn machine does what it claims to do. It fills the air with the smell of popcorn in a way no microwave popcorn can. It produces tastier results than any other popper we have used. What's not to love?

Waring Pro WPM25 Professional Popcorn Maker, Red Review

Waring Pro WPM25 Professional Popcorn Maker, Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 300w popper is working well and will deliver ready to eat popcorn within minutes after it's been warmed up the time it takes you to get your supplies ready to use.
Looks nice and is a fun item, but if your desire is the finished popcorn and not in owning an unusual popper, you can pop more and spend less money at the same time with another machine in my opinion.
Taste of the popped corn can vary depending on the type of corn, oil and salt you use, if you don't like it, try another combination. I buy larger sized concession stand oil and flavored salt, but buy my white popcorn in smaller bags so I can keep it fresher.
I love white popcorn, you might like yellow, but don't forget you can also mix batches to get something in between.
No matter which you like, it must be fresh to have the proper moisture content to pop properly.
Don't blame your popper all the time when it can be the corn thats at fault.
The clear sides plus top and bottom that you see are all ABS plastic, For the MSRP ~Manufactures Suggested Retail Price~ (LIST price, not talking about the discounted price), it should really have tempered glass in my opinion... they do use glass in the next models up it seems.
Even the hinges for the front door are plastic and IMO should be metal even with plastic sides.
Note this popper has a pretty large footprint so make sure you have a place to put it before you buy.. it's 11 x 11 x 17inches.
It has a pretty small popping pot (6" x 3.5"), you use 1 tablespoon oil and 1/3 cup corn per batch.
In my opinion, that's not much popcorn per cycle, it would take several batches to fill the tray in the bottom as shown in the promotional photo from Waring.
I measured the popped corn from each batch and for me, it's 4-5 cups, but can vary depending on how many kernels pop with the corn you use.
I uploaded a photo of the popping pan to show size and design.
Perhaps it's just ME,but I can eat 8 cups of popped corn without stopping 8-) Count on running many batches if there's more than one person eating corn.I really feel they could have put a cook unit in this about 50% larger without increasing the outer case size. (or the price)
The lid on the stainless steel pot that you open to pour in the oil and corn is pretty small, can be kind of tough to hold the metal flap open and dump in the oil and corn. The smaller size also makes cleaning a bit of a pain since the 2 lid flaps, stiring paddle with drive shaft and all attachment points do not come off and require you to get your cleaning wand or hand in half of the pot at a time since the lids are split into 2 and each is less than half the diameter of the pot. instructions suggest you pour some water in and run it to "steam" clean, but I'd still want to wipe it out after.
I found that putting a rubber band around the lid handles to hold them open makes it go a bit easier when cleaning it out with a soapy sponge "wand".
Also, be sure and clean inside of the top of the plastic case, it really gets a lot of oil spatter up there.
Again just to help you picture it...Even on the kitchen counter I have to bend down to see what I'm doing in there (I'm 6ft).
One additional tip... pull the plastic tray out a couple of inches before you dump the corn from the pot... will save picking it up off the floor.
Now the biggest problem I have with it... where do I keep it when not in use? Would love to let it set out as it looks okay and would be easier to use when the mood strikes, but don't have that kind of counter space.
UPDATE Nov 2010;
Two years later, I wanted everyone to know this is still working just fine and nothing has broken, even the light inside still has the same bulb... has popped many a bowl of corn at this point.
I do note the clear plastic sides and door are showing some wash and dry scratches(dull)from being cleaned of oil spatter after each use.
Be sure to read the comments attached to this review for more details in using this popper.

Nostalgia Electrics CCP-200 Vintage Collection 48-Inch Popcorn Cart, Red Review

Nostalgia Electrics CCP-200 Vintage Collection 48-Inch Popcorn Cart, Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I bought this popper last winter to add to our basement home theater and movie nights have never been better since we ditched the microwave popcorn! It's simple to use and makes great movie theater-tasting popcorn in no time if you follow the directions. It also looks pretty cool on or off the cart adding a nice touch to our home theater and bar area. After reading other reviews and comments, I have to agree that the limited space inside the popper makes it a little tricky when adding popcorn and oil, but not impossible. The more you use it, the more you get used to it. A warmer to keep the popcorn warm and a vent to release the steam during popping would have been nice. I admit I was surprised by how small the kettle was, but making about 3 or 4 batches ends up being plenty of popcorn for the 2 of us and our 2 children. Again, these are small gripes and yes, there are more professional quality poppers out there with more features, but for the money we paid and ease of use, we're very happy with it! Certainly beats microwave corn! I recommend using coconut oil and adding Flavacol or some sort of commercial popcorn seasoning to the kettle when popping. Enjoy the show in the comfort of your own home!

I bought this recently for hosting movie nights at my home (with 10-12 guests). I decided to spend a "little" extra for an American made product and couldn't be happier. It's built like a tank, easy to use (remember- the popping kettle is hot!), has a fairly quiet motor when running, and simple to clean.
It is well worth the price difference from imported poppers- for example, the Waring popper that can be seen at major retailers is much smaller and looks like an easy bake oven when comparing materials and construction. The Paragon popper could almost be described as a "saleman sample" size of a commercial machine- which is really is. I ordered it on a Monday (refurbished, factory direct) and received it Wednesday, shipping from Iowa to Ohio!
I'm now experimenting with various oil combinations Canola/corn, etc. for the best taste. The combination packages of oil/popcorn/salt/flavoring taste too much like what you get in theaters!
