We watched Paul Blart Mall cop recently at our local theatre. I have very mixed reactions from this movie, which meant that I had a hard time knowing how to rate it. So I think I will break down my review and rating to Family movie and Adult entertainment value.
Ok, lets start with the viewpoint of a family movie. In this day and age, there are way too few movies out there that are good for the whole family. Most everything out is full of filthy language, sex and way over the top violence. So if you are looking to take the family to see a good family film, your choices are very limited. Oh Im sure you can find a movie like Bambi or something like that playing, but Im talking about a movie that will contain at least a little entertainment value for the adults as well.
From that perspective, Paul Blart Mall Cop is a good balance. The movie is clean and the kids will love it, just perhaps not as much as a good animation. It also has just enough entertainment value to keep the adults in the family entertained. So for family value alone, Id give the movie a 7 or perhaps 8, on that 1 to 10 scale.
Now for the value of the film as entertainment for adults. This bring me to my first rant. If you have seen the previews for this movie, you have seen all the good parts. It seems that today, in order to draw people to a movie, especially a comedy, you have to give away all the good stuff. Now I understand the marketing concept of needing to draw people in to see the movie. But should we really be giving away all the good stuff for free?
Whats the point in going to see these movies if you have seen all the funny parts alerady? We need to bring a little mystery and suspence back to movie watching.
Ive not not heard so many cheesy 1 liners since those Bruce Willis Die Hard films. Paul Blart lives with his mom and his daughter. These 2 supporting actresses have no acting ability at all. Or if they do, it is certainly not seen in this movie. The films plot has been done soooo many times, and is so tired, that it should be taken out and shot.
Its that same ole story of a guy (Paul Blart) that is overweight, has no real skills and his is trying to fit in and find love in a world run by thin professionals. He finds a woman in the mall that he falls for, tries to win her love, and falls flat on his face.
His redemption comes when the mall is taken over and he is the one that comes to the rescue. One odd thing that I did not understand in the movie was that when the mall was taken over, there were lots and lots of cops just outside. Their first attemt to enter the mall was supposedly thwarted by some electronic survellance. But later on, there seemed to be no reason why the cops could not just walk right into the mall. Perhaps they were keystone cops.
The only even partially redeeming part for me was the theives that came to take over the mall. They used skate boards and BMX type bikes to navatigate through the mall. For a while, I thought I was watching Cirque Du Soliel. These thieves acrobatics and stunts inside the mall almost made the film worth while for me. Almost, but not quite.
For the adult entertaiment value part on this review, using that same 0-10 scale, Id have to give this movie a 6. (I think I was being genereous with that)
