I happen to catch "Berlin '36" (a German movie released in 2009) recently at the 2011 Jewish & Israeli Film Festival here in Cincinnati. It brings a fictitious retelling of curious real-life events from 1936 when Jewish high-jumper Gretel Bergmann, who had escaped Germany and was highly successful in England, essentially was forced back to Germany (under threat of harm to her family) so that the Nazi regime could tell the US (which was threatening boycotting the 36 Berlin Olympic Games) that yes, the German Olympic team did in fact include Jewish competitors. Things go very wrong upon her return to Germany and once it was clear that the US team would particiapte in the Olympic Games. There are many further twists and turns after that...
I could not find a listing for this movie on Amazon, which surprised me. I sure hope that Amazon will list it at some point. The most amazing thing is that at the end of the movie, there is a short interview with the real-life Gretel Bergmann, now age 95 and living in New York, just amazing. Check out this movie if you have a chance!
