John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) painted this, the most famous of his three depictions of Shakespeare's tragic Ophelia from HAMLET, in 1894. This version shows her moments before her suicide by drowning. Ophelia, pure of heart as the daisies that rest in her lap and lovely as the roses growing near her, sits by a secluded pond, her raised arms alone signaling the distraction of her mind after learning of the death of her father, Polonius, at the hands of her lover, Hamlet. Perhaps the most striking feature of the painting and of the print is Ophelia's luminescent auburn hair, which streams down her back and resembles the water into which she will fall. The print is a good, medium size, and all of its colors ring true. The title and the artist's name are printed on the bottom margin. This OPHELIA looks especially nice framed in gold.
