From the image of this online, I thought I was buying a reproduction of the original one-sheet. After it got back from the frame shop, I was mildly annoyed that the framer hadn't know to crop it to eliminate some fine print running vertically at the left edge. After about a month, I finally poked my face close enough to read what it said: "Illustration: Michel Gondry." That's, funny, I thought. The movie director (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, etc.) must have been named after his grandfather who made movie posters in the 30's. Then, to Google. Turns out, this was created by the young movie director in 1990: one of his first paid gigs, creating the poster for a Vigo revival. Gondry, I learned, doesn't like it much.
Well, I do. It looks like propaganda art drawn in chalk on a wet sidewalk. The composition doesn't invite you in, it urges you to something unseen, left of the frame. Much like the work of Jean Vigo.
As for Michel Gondry, there are a few things he's done on film I would be embarrassed of, if I were him. Still, BE KIND, REWIND is very endearing, and ETERNAL SUNSHINE may be the best English language film of the past 25 years. There are certain music videos and commercials of Gondry's I would chop off a finger to be able to claim as my own.
So, it's a pleasure to look at it this poster, but a mixed pleasure. I admire a picture that says, "Why are you looking here, when the real story is out of frame?" Yet, it is troubling to be reminded that I'm not Michel Gondry, and I never will be.
Evidently, I don't even have the good taste to know a bad poster when I see one.
